The Deputy General Secretary of the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen has advised individuals to report party members campaigning for possible flagbearer aspirants ahead of the 2024 general elections to the disciplinary committee if they think it is too early.

His comment comes after many people have questioned the timing regarding posters of potential NPP Presidential aspirants have been displayed across the country.

Speaking to Neat FM, Mr Boahen said the New Patriotic Party has rules that members are expected to obey.

He urged members to report to the disciplinary committee if they think it is too early for the presidential hopefuls to declare their intention to lead the party ahead 2024 general election.

“If anyone thinks it’s too early for these personalities to begin campaigning for the flagbearership position, the person can do so by reporting them to the disciplinary committee of the party.” Obiri Boahen said on Neat Fm

Obiri Boahen disclosed that per the party’s policy, opening of nomination for possible flagbearer aspirants will be opened in 2024.

“We will elect a new flagbearer in 2024. When a party is in opposition, a new flagbearer is selected two years to election but when a party is in power, it does that same year to the general election. “

When asked if it won’t be too late for the potential candidate to start campaigning prior to the main election, the Deputy General Secretary said “However, the Party Executive can choose to change the decision to select a new leader of the party early enough to start campaigning for the main election. The NEC takes decision in the supreme interest of the party.”

Stating his stance on whether is too early for them to declare their intention to lead the party ahead of the general election in 2024, he noted, “Certainly to a some extent I don’t see it that way. The National Executive Committee and the National Council haven’t opened nominations so it wrong to start campaigning. If Dr Bawumia, Alan Kyeremanteng, Kennedy Agyapong, Afriyie Akoto, Joe Ghartey, Bryan Acheampong, Boakye Agyarko, Kofi Konadu, others have not been seen posting their own posters and they have also not told anyone to post their posters around, you can’t punish them for seeing their posters around.”

Speaking on Dr Owusu Akoto Afriyie’s ‘secret’ meeting with some delegates of the party and declaring his intention to lead the party in 2024, Mr Boahen said the full fact of the meeting is not known.

“Let’s get the full facts from those who were present before we can draw a conclusion to the issues Dr  commented on” Obiri Boahen noted

There is currently intense campaign ongoing on social media and other platforms from the camps of the various flagbearer hopefuls.
