The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has restored water to the residents of Kotobabi, Abavana two days after the Republic Press’ reportage on the plight of the community members.
Residents complained that, they have not had water since May, a situation they said has brought untoward hardship to them as they have to travel long distances in search of portable drinking water.
The residents have thus commended the Republic Press for highlighting their water crisis some few months ago. According to the residents, GWCL restored water to their homes exactly two days after the reportage.
Background
Residents of Kotobabi Abavana in the Greater Accra region are calling on the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to restore water to the community.
This follows water shortage in the community in more than two months. The community members told the Republic Press that all attempts to get the GWCL to restore water to the community have come to nothing.
One of the resident said “since June we have not had water, for us selling water is what we do here, the water shortage has brought a lot of hardship on us and our families. Now we fetch ground water for our daily house chores and cook with sachet water. If you want pipe water, you have to hire a tricycle and pack kuffour gallons in and go all the way to Alajo before getting pipe water. We are begging Ghana water to restore water to us. I personally went to see one Mr. Lawer at the Ghana water; East Accra who explained that there was a problem with the main pipeline connecting Abavana and promised it will be fixed immediately but till now nothing has been done about it.”
A food vendor, Sadia also said she has been hard hit by the water shortage as she had to pay more to get water.
“We have not had water for about two months; we travel to buy water in gallons. Just last week the landlady was demanding water bill from us which is not fair because we have not had water for more than two months, so where from the water bill? She asked
Another resident said “we now depend on buller water but it is not sustainable, the buller water is full of salt, we cannot use it. We are begging Ghana water for restore the water for us.”
A hairdresser who only gave her name as Mercy said “we cannot operate without water. The water shortage is really affecting our business. Sometimes customers will come and go because there is no water. We manage the one we buy from the abochi guys but by the time they bring us more, many of our customers have left.”
A worried looking resident said “we get water these days from Abelenkpe and Alajo. We put kuffour gallons in tricycles to Alajo before getting water and it’s expensive. We need our water back.”
When the Republic Press reached out to the Ghana Water Company Limited for their response, one of the officials who spoke on anonymity said residents of Kotobabi, Abavana all have water running through their taps but few households have issues because there is a problem with one of the pipelines.
He also assured that those without water will get water by end of today Friday July 30, 2021
