Residents living around Ayi Mensah Park in the Greater Accra region have expressed worry over heaps of waste that have littered the entire area.

The stench, according to the residents is unbearable and there are fears of a possible outbreak of cholera if the situation remains unchanged.

According to some residents Management of Ayi Mensah Park have turned blind eye on the growing refuse dump behind the estate.

Residents say all attempt to get management of the estate to call on the appropriate authorities to solve the problem before it causes serious health issues have proven futile.

The refuse dump which was originally evacuated by a resident a year ago is now springing up again as the La Nkwantanang Municipal Assembly failed to provide dustbins and refuse containers as promised.

“The place has been turned into a dumping site and a cemetery to bury the dead, the most recent burial took place two weeks ago.” Some residents told Republic Press

Responding to the issues, the Environmental Health Officer of the La Nkwantanang Municipal Assembly, Mr. Joseph Quacoe said the area of discussion is the Ayi Mensah Cemetery.

“I led the evacuation of the refuse dump, but I told them to register with accredited waste collection companies who will charge a fee to collect their refuse because the area is a residential.” Mr. Quacoe told Republic Press

He said the assembly cannot provide dustbins for a residential area but notwithstanding, “I have tasked my officers at the Zonal Council to access the situation and report to me immediately.”
