In March 2017, Rex Owusu Marfo, popularly known as Rex Omar, was entrusted with the leadership of the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO) as its Board Chairman.
Tasked with reviving a struggling organization, Rex Omar’s administration tackled a myriad of challenges, transforming GHAMRO into a more efficient and accountable entity.
When he took the reins, GHAMRO faced a lack of working capital, operated from shared office space, and struggled to align with international standards for collective rights management.
Despite receiving no government financial support, Rex Omar spearheaded initiatives that modernized the organization and improved outcomes for its members.
Achievements Under Rex Omar’s Leadership
- Fair and Equitable Distribution:
To ensure transparency and fairness, Rex Omar’s administration partnered with Global Music Monitoring of Ireland to implement a system for monitored log sheets. Additionally, they pursued government support for developing a comprehensive software system to enhance GHAMRO’s operations. These efforts resulted in a dramatic increase in earnings for members, with the highest earners’ semi-annual royalties rising from GH¢4,000 to GH¢50,000. - Royalty Collection:
Under Rex Omar, GHAMRO focused on strengthening its royalty collection mechanisms. The percentage of radio and television stations paying royalties doubled, albeit modestly, from 5% to over 10%. His administration also took legal action against major broadcasters and telecommunications companies, winning significant cases that bolstered revenue streams. - Infrastructure Development:
GHAMRO saw significant infrastructure upgrades under his leadership. Collaborating with other organizations, a three-story office building was initiated, and regional offices were established nationwide. - Transparency and Accountability:
Rex Omar introduced robust internal and external auditing processes, ensuring financial transparency. Annual audited accounts were published and shared with members, solidifying trust in GHAMRO’s operations. - Welfare Initiatives:
For the first time in GHAMRO’s history, a Tier 3 pension and life insurance scheme were implemented for members, providing financial security in times of need.
A Legacy of Leadership
Over his tenure, Rex Omar’s leadership style has been hailed as principled, compassionate, and transformative. His strategic vision not only improved GHAMRO’s financial performance but also redefined its role as a collective management organization in Ghana’s music industry.
Authored by Jackson Brefo, Acting Chief Executive Officer of GHAMRO, this account highlights Rex Omar’s remarkable contributions to the organization and the music industry at large.
