The Ministry of Roads and Highways, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has launched an investigation into the rock blasting incident at Gomoa Budumburam in the Central Region, which resulted in the tragic loss of three lives and injuries to over 30 residents.
In a press statement, the Ministry expressed its commitment to ensuring that all affected individuals receive the necessary support and care. “The Ministry is working closely with institutions such as the Ghana Police Service and NADMO to verify the number of casualties and injured and to ensure appropriate care for all those affected.”
The statement also highlighted that the contractor had successfully conducted 21 controlled blasting exercises at the same location in collaboration with NADMO and the Ghana Police Service without any issues.
Background
On October 14, 2024, a dynamite explosion at Budumburam (Liberia Camp) along the Accra-Winneba highway killed three people and seriously injured over 30 others, including a seven-month-old baby. The explosion occurred during routine rock blasting as part of ongoing highway construction.
Reports indicate that the blasting, intended to facilitate roadworks, took place without prior notice to the local community, sparking outrage. Residents noted that the construction company usually provides warnings for people to evacuate the area before blasting, but the reasons for Monday afternoon’s explosion remain unclear.
The incident has left the community in shock and mourning as families grieve for the victims and hope for the recovery of those injured.
