The Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon. Kwame Agbodza, has inaugurated a five-member committee to assess and enhance the effectiveness of the Axle Load Control Programme in Ghana.
The initiative aims to address challenges in the system and improve road safety across the country.
The newly formed committee consists of representatives from National Security, Private Haulage Operators, the Ghana Highway Authority, the Ministry of Transport, and the Ghana Standards Authority.
Their mandate includes identifying systemic and operational issues, recommending necessary reforms, evaluating regulatory compliance, and reviewing the management of collected fines.
Overloading of heavy cargo vehicles has been identified as a key factor in the premature deterioration of road infrastructure and a significant contributor to road accidents.
To mitigate these issues, the Ministry of Roads and Highways is working to reform the Axle Load Control Programme, which has faced operational difficulties in recent years.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring road safety and extending the lifespan of the country’s road networks. Officials assured the public that necessary measures would be taken to improve enforcement mechanisms and promote sustainable transportation practices.
