Passengers travelling on the busy Kumasi–Takoradi Highway were thrown into fear and panic following an attack that saw robbers intercept and attack multiple buses in the early hours of Wednesday, February 4.

The syndicated d robbery attack targeted travellers enroute Kumasi to Takoradi, raising concerns about safety on Ghana’s major highways.

Reports say the armed assailants stopped several buses and forcibly robbed passengers of their belongings. Victims were dispossessed of cash, mobile phones, and other personal valuables, leaving many stranded and traumatized after the incident. The attackers reportedly operated with speed and coordination, suggesting a planned operation rather than a random act.

Eyewitness accounts described moments of fear as passengers were forced to surrender their belongings under threat, while drivers were rendered helpless during the attack. Although no official reports of fatalities have been reported, the incident has left many commuters shaken and deeply concerned about their safety on long-distance journeys.

The attack has sparked renewed calls for stronger highway security measures. Road users, transport operators, and passengers are urging the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to intensify patrols, surveillance, and intelligence operations along major transport corridors, especially during night and early-morning travel hours.

Security analysts have also emphasized the need for improved inter-regional security coordination, deployment of highway patrol units, and the use of modern surveillance technology to deter criminal activities on major roads. They stress that highway robberies not only endanger lives but also disrupt commerce, tourism, and public confidence in national transport systems.

Residents in communities along the highway have expressed worry that repeated attacks could make the route increasingly unsafe, affecting economic activities and daily travel. Transport unions and commercial drivers have also called for government intervention to protect both passengers and operators.

Authorities have been urged to launch a full investigation into the incident, identify the perpetrators, and bring the perpetrators to justice to prevent future occurrences.

As investigations continue, commuters are being advised to remain vigilant, avoid late-night travel where possible, and report suspicious activities to security agencies. The Kumasi–Takoradi highway attack stands as a reminder of the urgent need for sustained security presence and proactive crime-prevention strategies to protect travelers across Ghana.
