Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, a member of Parliament for the South Dayi constituency, has apologised to former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan for accusing him of deliberately missing a penalty against Uruguay in the 2010 World Cup.

Mr. Dafeamekpor during an interview with an Accra-based radio station, Radio XYZ, alleged that the former Sunderland man decided to miss the crucial penalty, which could have taken Ghana into the semi-final as the first African country because the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was in power.

The MP made this comment following Asamoah Gyan’s recent appointment to the Bawumia manifesto committee.

Expressing regret via social media posts, he said after careful thought, he is sorry for his remarks.

“The Black Stars & other National Teams have iconically rallied & carried our passions, dreams and aspirations for glory to the world. Upon reflection & calls from people like Kenpong, I retract & unreservedly apologize to Asamoah Gyan, for my comments,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Asamoah Gyan, who left professional football in June 2023, is still the record holder for the most goals scored by Africa in World Cup history with six goals.
