The Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association (RNMA) is planning to demonstrate against the government’s delay in paying their allowances. The association is owed 11 months of unpaid allowance which has taken a toll on their livelihoods.
Despite being invited by the Ministry of Health to discuss the issue, the RNMA has refused to suspend their planned demonstration.
Mavis Akoto Frempong, a general secretary of Nurses and Midwives Association of Ghana expressed displeasure about the unpaid allowances for almost one year.
“We have passed through all the due process to get this issue resolved however, it’s still not working. Even, our financial clearance has not been approved. We’ve to pay for our loans among others and by the end of this month,we will complete the service so what are we doing?”, They stressed.
The RNMA had initially planned to demonstrate on June 30, 2023, but it’s unclear if the demonstration still holds or has been rescheduled for this year.. The association has also threatened to strike if their demands aren’t met. The Ministry of Health has invited the RNMA for discussions, however, the outcome remains uncertain. There’s no clear indication of when the government plans to settle the allowance arrears .
The RNMA stressed their grievances to the government to provide them with financial clearance and as well pay their allowance or risk the 14 working – day demonstration as stated in the press conference.
