Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has criticized the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for frequently sacking coaches of Ghana’s national teams.
He registered his displeasure during Parliament’s first sitting of the year on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 whiles addressing the recent abysmal performance of the Black Stars.
According to him, the problems of Ghana’s football, goes beyond just dismissing of coaches.
The Black Stars were eliminated in the group stage of the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast after picking up just two points in three matches.
Ghana lost their first game to Cape Verde, and drew with both Egypt and Mozambique, who were all in Group B.
Following Ghana’s exit from the tournament, head coach Chris Hughton was sacked by the GFA whiles he had eleven more months on his contract.
Unhappy with this phenomenon, Mr. Bagbin noted it was important for stakeholders to come together and come up with a comprehensive plan going forward.
“It is high time we saddle together to discuss the current state of Ghana’s football, and consider a comprehensive strategy for the future,” he said.
“Sacking of coaches is not the panacea to the challenges. We must evaluate our football infrastructure, youth development programmes, coaching standards and administrative structures to identify areas for improvement.”
The GFA has started processes to hire a new coach for the Black Stars as they have set up a five-member committee.
