An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to Depak Sonar, a 35-year-old Sales and Marketing Manager of DPS Industries Limited, who is facing charges of stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Sonar was granted bail in the sum of GH¢700,000 with three sureties, all of whom must be public servants residing within the court’s jurisdiction and earning a monthly salary of no less than GH¢5,000.

Additionally, the sureties must justify their bail with property equivalent to the bail amount.

The accused, who was initially remanded on January 14, 2025, reappeared before the court on January 24, 2025, where his defence counsel successfully prayed for bail.

As part of the bail conditions, Sonar is required to deposit his Ghana Card with the court registry and report to the police every two weeks until further notice.

The case has been adjourned to April 23, 2025 for further proceedings.

Allegations Against Sonar

According to the prosecution, between January 2024 and January 2025, while employed as the Sales and Marketing Manager at DPS Industries Limited, Sonar allegedly misappropriated GH¢681,000 in company sales proceeds.

Background

DPS Industries Limited, a leading supplier of plastic and household items based in Baatsonaa, Greater Accra, employed Sonar to manage sales and account for proceeds from distributed products.

The company began noticing discrepancies in Sonar’s financial submissions and on January 10, 2025 invited him for an audit.

During the review, it was discovered that he had allegedly misappropriated GH¢681,000.

Investigations revealed that Sonar used GH¢190,000 of the funds to settle personal debts, while the remaining GH¢491,000 was reportedly invested in casino gambling and online sports betting.

Following the audit findings, the company’s administrator, Ezekiel Ahado, filed a complaint with the police, leading to Sonar’s arrest on January 11, 2025.

The accused admitted to the offense in his caution statement and pleaded for time to refund the stolen amount.

The case remains under investigation, and Sonar has been charged and arraigned before the court to answer for the allegations.
