The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan, conducted a site visit to the Kpong and Weija Water Treatment Plants to gain firsthand insight into their operations and challenges.
During her visit, several critical issues were highlighted by the plant management.
The foremost concern raised was the urgent need for funding to support the expansion of both treatment plants. This expansion is deemed essential to meet the increasing water demands of the growing population.
Additionally, there were calls for the construction of protective walls around the facilities to prevent encroachment, which poses a significant threat to the integrity and security of the plants.
Another pressing issue discussed was the detrimental impact of sand mining activities in the vicinity of the water treatment plants.
These activities are not only causing environmental degradation but are also threatening the water supply by increasing sedimentation and potential contamination.
In response to these concerns, Madam Alhassan expressed her strong commitment to finding sustainable solutions.
“We recognize the critical role these plants play in providing clean water to our communities. Therefore, we are committed to securing the necessary funding for their expansion and implementing protective measures against encroachment and environmental threats,” she stated.
The Minister assured plant operators and the local communities that her office would work closely with relevant stakeholders to address these challenges swiftly and effectively.
The Ministry’s goal is to ensure the continued delivery of safe and reliable water services, essential for the health and well-being of the population.
