Sarkodie, DKB, Efya, Ama K. Abebrese, others begin #FreeAkuapemPoloo campaign

Some Ghanaian celebrities have added their voices to the trending issue concerning Akuapem Poloo’s conviction by an an Accra Circuit Court.

They described the action as a bit harsh and could affect the son of the socialite psychological.

Actress Rosemond Brown popularly known as Akuapem Poloo was convicted on her own plea by the Circuit Court in Accra after pleading guilty to three charges.

She was charged with publication of nude pictures with her seven-year-old son. The court presided over by Her Honour Christina Cann deferred the actress’ sentence to Friday, April 16, 2021 for her to undergo a pregnancy test in compliance with the law regarding a woman who has pleaded guilty in court.

She has however been remanded into custody for the prosecution to take her to any Government hospital to conduct the pregnancy test.

When asked by the court if she still stand by her change of plea, she said yes, before she was remanded.

Reacting to the convicting brouhaha, rapper Sarkodie posted on his social media platform pleaded with the court to pardon the young actress.

@sarkodie I think it’s a little harsh to separate a child from the mum just because of pictures taken … would want to plead with the law to pardon our sister #FreeAkuapemPoloo

Comedian DKB expressed his disappointment at Child Rights International for sending Akuapem Poloo to court.

According to DKB it is unfortunate for the NGO take such an action against a mother instead of taking her through counselling session.

“This whole issue with Akuapem poloo is beyond me .. we have abused girls , no beds at maternity wards !!! Accidents here n there … Economy Gbas .. And This Is What is being highlighted.. for what purpose..?? I can’t understand it ! Chale .. Wabl3,” Efya also wrote on Twitter.

Actress Ama K Abebrese also commented on the conviction of the young actress. She pleaded with the Judge to be lenient in this case.

“I myself saw Akuapem Polio’s pics online and reported it for Instagram to take them down. The pictures were removed and she apologised publicly. She is his mother and I don’t think she meant any harm to her child. However I don’t think she should be handed a jail sentence. I hope the judge is lenient in this case. There are literally peadophiles and child molesters whom are are walking free. I hear of some cases where some people who have raped and sodomisied children are not prosecuted.” She wrote on Twitter

Background

The outspoken actress is facing three charges of publication of obscene materials, engaging in domestic violence, a conduct that in any way undermines another person’s privacy or integrity and engaging in domestic violence namely conduct that in any way detracts or is likely to detract from another person’s dignity and worth as a human being.

Rosemond who had displayed her naked picture with her son on social media on June 30, 2020 pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

GHc100k bail

The Circuit Court however admitted her to bail in the sum of GHc100,000 with four sureties.

Two of the sureties are to be justified with landed property worth same amount.

In addition to the bail conditions, the court said the title deed of the property, should be deposited at the court’s Registry pending the final determination of the matter.

This was after her then lawyer Philip Kofi Bekoe had prayed the court to admit her to bail on grounds she is a well-known person. He said his client has people of substance who would stand as sureties when granted bail.

The prosecution did not opposed to the bail application.
