Two personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have been injured following a second explosion during efforts to contain a tanker fire at Potsin Junction.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, March 17, 2026, along the Kasoa-Winneba Road, where emergency responders were battling a burning fuel tanker.

Reports indicate the situation initially appeared to be under control after the fire broke out around 5:30 a.m. However, the tanker suddenly reignited, triggering a powerful secondary explosion that caught firefighters off guard.

Eyewitnesses described the moment as chaotic and terrifying, with one survivor recounting how a spark from the tanker rapidly escalated into a massive fireball within seconds.

The two injured officers were directly exposed to the blast while working to extinguish the flames. The force of the explosion reportedly threw one of them off a fire tender. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital and are currently receiving treatment.

One of the officers had been positioned on top of the fire engine at the time of the explosion, leading to a fall upon impact.

No fatalities have been officially confirmed so far.

The explosion has left residents in the Potsin area shaken, with some individuals reportedly unaccounted for in the immediate aftermath.

According to Central Regional correspondent Kofi Adjei, the tanker continued to burn even after the second blast, posing an ongoing threat.

Firefighters are facing significant challenges as the fuel-laden vehicle repeatedly reignites, increasing the risk of further explosions.

The full extent of damage to property and the impact on residents is yet to be determined. Meanwhile, the GNFS has deployed additional personnel from nearby stations to help contain the fire and prevent another flare-up.

Motorists travelling along the Kasoa-Winneba stretch are being urged to exercise caution or use alternative routes, as emergency teams maintain a strong presence at the scene.
