An Accra Circuit Court has set February 27, 2025, as the date for sentencing Foster Nyarko, a 36-year-old unemployed man, after he pleaded guilty to multiple counts of stealing and unlawful entry at government institutions.
The court, presided over by Her Honour Basilia Adjei-Tawaih, found Nyarko guilty of stealing a Samsung Galaxy A54 5G mobile phone valued at GHC 4,999.00 from the office of Celis-Jane Nyadroh, Principal Administrator at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) National Headquarters in Accra.
Details of the Offence
According to Prosecutor Chief Inspector Daniel Ofori-Appiah, the theft occurred on October 22, 2024. Nyarko had visited CHRAJ under the pretext of following up on an application at the Human Resource Department. However, upon reaching the first-floor Room 15 office of the complainant, he found it empty and took the opportunity to steal the mobile phone from the desk.
Nyadroh filed an official complaint with the Ministries Police two days later, on October 24, 2024. Investigations into the case led to Nyarko’s arrest on January 30, 2025, after he was caught committing another theft at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons in Ridge, Accra.
CCTV footage from CHRAJ provided clear evidence of his involvement in the mobile phone theft, confirming his unauthorized entry and actions. During police interrogation, Nyarko admitted to the crime and was subsequently charged under Sections 152 and 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Previous Theft Case at Ministry of Labour
Further investigations also linked Nyarko to another theft at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment on December 4, 2024. On that occasion, he gained access to the ministry under the guise of seeking a cleaning job. Instead of proceeding to the Human Resource Department as directed, he went to the second floor and entered the office of Daniel Sakyi Asiedu, a lawyer and Deputy Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation.
Finding the office unoccupied, Nyarko stole an HP laptop worth GHC 24,745.00, concealed it in his backpack, and left the premises.
During police interrogations, he admitted to selling the stolen laptop to an unidentified buyer in Takoradi.
Having pleaded guilty to both thefts, Nyarko now awaits sentencing, which is scheduled for February 27, 2025.
