On Saturday, January 18, 2025, a violent confrontation between illegal miners and military personnel occurred at the AngloGold Ashanti Mines in Ghana.

The incident, which took place around 11:00 PM, resulted in the deaths of seven illegal miners and left one seriously injured. A soldier also sustained injuries during the clash.

According to a press release from Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), approximately 60 armed illegal miners breached the security fence and entered the Cote D’or Ramp, aiming to access the Deep Decline section of the site.

When confronted by soldiers deployed under Operation HALT II, the miners, equipped with locally manufactured rifles, pump-action guns, machetes, and other weapons, opened fire. The soldiers returned fire in self-defense, leading to the fatalities. Following the exchange, the remaining miners fled the scene.

The injured soldier, struck by pellets from a pump-action gun, has since received medical treatment. Additionally, six pump-action BB cartridges were recovered during the operation.

Military Warns Against Armed Confrontations

The Ghana Armed Forces reiterated its stance on the use of lethal force in situations where lives are at risk. The military emphasized that personnel deployed under authorized operations are permitted to defend themselves, civilians, and property when confronted with armed threats.

“We urge illegal miners to desist from encroaching on mining concessions and engaging in violent confrontations with security forces,” the statement read. “Such actions could have fatal consequences.”

Background

Illegal mining has been a persistent challenge in Ghana, with concession areas like AngloGold Ashanti Mines frequently targeted by intruders. These incursions often escalate into violent encounters with security forces.

Operation HALT II, a military-led initiative, was established to combat illegal mining activities and safeguard Ghana’s natural resources. The GAF reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order and called on all individuals involved in illegal mining to cease their activities to prevent further loss of life.

The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between illegal miners and security forces, underscoring the need for a comprehensive approach to address the underlying issues fueling illegal mining in Ghana.
