Several homes and shops at Ofankor Barrier Spot M along the Ofankor-Achimota stretch were submerged following heavy rainfall that lashed parts of Accra on Monday, June 22, leaving residents and business owners counting their losses.

The downpour caused floodwaters to inundate residential and commercial properties in the area, trapping some residents in their homes and disrupting normal economic activities.

Affected traders were seen rushing to salvage goods and equipment from their flooded shops as water levels continued to rise. Some residents also struggled to move their belongings to safer locations to prevent further damage.

Residents say the flooding has become a recurring problem whenever there is heavy rainfall, attributing the situation to choked and inadequate drainage systems in the area.

According to them, poor drainage infrastructure has made the community increasingly vulnerable to flooding, resulting in frequent destruction of property and loss of income.

Many expressed frustration over what they described as years of neglect, noting that repeated appeals to authorities to address the drainage challenges have yielded little progress.

Speaking to Citi News, a resident and fitting shop owner, Kwesi Ayensu Gyambrah, said the persistent flooding continues to threaten lives, businesses and investments in the community.

He called on the relevant authorities to take urgent steps to desilt existing drains and expand drainage channels to accommodate the volume of water generated during heavy rains.

According to him, a long-term solution is needed to prevent future flooding and protect residents from the recurring destruction caused by the annual rains.

The latest flooding incident adds to growing concerns over the impact of inadequate drainage infrastructure in parts of the Greater Accra Region, where heavy rains often leave communities inundated and residents displaced.
