Flooding disrupted movement across several parts of Accra on Sunday, March 29, 2026, following hours of heavy rainfall.

The downpour, which began around 3:30 a.m. and continued into the morning, affected major roads and low-lying communities across the capital. The rainfall had been forecast by the Ghana Meteorological Agency.

Areas impacted included Dansoman, Weija, Kasoa Old Barrier, Mallam Junction, Kaneshie, Accra Central, Circle, and surrounding communities within the Greater Accra Region. Residents and commuters reported that several roads in these locations were submerged, making movement difficult for both vehicles and pedestrians.

In some areas, traffic built up as drivers attempted to navigate flooded sections of roads, while pedestrians were forced to wade through water to reach their destinations. The situation was particularly challenging in low-lying areas, where water accumulated quickly during the rainfall.

The flooding is believed to have resulted from the intensity of the rain, which overwhelmed drainage systems in parts of the city and surrounding communities. Accra has long faced challenges with urban flooding, especially during periods of sustained rainfall.

Although no casualties had been officially reported at the time of filing this report, residents expressed concern about the recurring nature of flooding in affected areas. Some noted that similar incidents occur frequently during the rainy season, raising questions about drainage capacity and urban planning.

Authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the extent of the damage, as residents continued to assess the impact on homes, businesses, and transportation. In some areas, minor property damage was reported, though a comprehensive assessment had not been completed.

According to the Ghana Meteorological Agency, the rainfall was linked to a rainstorm system that had earlier formed south of Benin and moved westwards. The system brought cloudiness, thunderstorms, and varying intensities of rainfall across coastal areas and parts of the middle sector.

The development has added to ongoing concerns about flooding in Accra, particularly in communities prone to waterlogging. Residents in affected areas say the situation continues to disrupt daily activities whenever heavy rains occur.
