Traders in Accra Central Business District have recounted how heavy Christmas shopping activity led to a stampede at the market on Monday, December 22, following severe congestion in the area.
In interviews with Adom News, the traders said the incident occurred as large numbers of shoppers thronged the market to purchase food items and other festive necessities. The unusually high human traffic, they explained, created panic among both traders and shoppers.
Eyewitnesses reported that several people collapsed during the chaos, including a pregnant woman. Others, particularly children, reportedly lost mobile phones and cash amid the confusion.
The situation was brought under control after officers from the Ghana National Fire Service intervened, using water to calm the crowd and ease tensions, preventing the incident from escalating further.
Accra Central Market remains one of the busiest commercial centres in the capital, particularly during the Christmas season, when thousands of shoppers converge daily to prepare for the festivities.
