The Mayor of Cape Coast, George Justice, has expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of roads within the metropolis, revealing that most of them have outlived their design lifespan and now require complete asphalt reconstruction rather than routine patching.

Cape Coast Mayor, George Justice Arthur interacts with the Media during press conference to address impact of the perennial flooding in the metropolis.

Speaking during a media encounter at his conference room on Thursday, 25th June, 2026, the Mayor said the poor state of many roads has become a major challenge to motorists, pedestrians and businesses, affecting transportation and economic activities across the metropolis.

According to the Mayor, many of the roads in Cape Coast were constructed several decades ago and have outlived their intended lifespan due to continuous use, increasing traffic volumes and inadequate rehabilitation over the years.

“The majority of roads in Cape Coast are overaged. What they need now is not just patching potholes but complete asphalt reconstruction to restore them to acceptable standards,” he stated.

He explained that while temporary repairs may provide short-term relief, they are not sustainable solutions for roads whose structural integrity has significantly deteriorated. Hence proposed a comprehensive asphalt overlay and reconstruction programme to improve the durability and quality of roads across the metropolis.

He reiterated that major stretches within the metropolis which experts have earmarked to have overaged and thus require an asphaltic overlay includes Ankaful,Pedu, De-Graft Johnson, Nana Mbra and others.

Mr. Enoch Adjei Okpoti, the Metro Roads Engineer raised the concerns over the condition of overaged road networks on some of the now busy roads in the metropolis, warning that the deteriorating state is affecting movement and safety.

He stated that a request has been made the head office through the Central Regional Office of Roads and Highway for the construction of asphalt roads to address the problem.

Coordinating Director for the Cape Coast Metropolis, Mr. Asuma Adama Braimah cautioned against the erection of unauthorized signposts and billboards, noting that some are obstructing roads and pavements.

He warned that effective July 6, the Assembly will commence a removal exercise and that offenders will be made to pay a penalty.
