The Chief Executive Officer of the Shelter Afrique, His Excellency Andrew Chimphondah, has assured the Ministry of Works and Housing of the organisation’s support in the area of housing to enable the Government to achieve its agenda of rolling out affordable housing for Ghanaians.

He stated that Shelter Afrique seeks to ensure that every African, particularly those on low income have access to good quality housing they can afford, located in safe and secure communities where they can raise their families and thrive as proud citizens. That he added the vision ties in with the Ghana government’s agenda to provide affordable housing to the citizens.

His Excellency Andrew Chimphondah said this when he paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Works and Housing, Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye at his office in Accra to discuss Shelter Afrique’s operations, strategy and plan toward low-cost housing in Ghana.

Shelter Afrique is a Pan- African institution that was established in 1981 to partner with African countries to mobilise financial and research solutions to provide low-cost housing for its citizenry. It has a membership of 44 African countries of which Ghana is a member.

In his response, Hon. Asenso-Boakye thanked him for the visit and said he is happy that Ghana is a member of Shelter Afrique, and that, the collaboration between Ghana and the organization will go a long way to help Ghana in the provision of affordable housing.

According to the Minister, Government is playing an active role by putting measures in place to solve the housing deficit, but said Government alone cannot do it and therefore, there is the need for Public-Private Partnership to address the situation.

He indicated that statistics show that 60 per cent of Ghana’s population will need some government assistance to own a home. He, therefore, called for a stronger partnership between the Ministry and the private sector to help address the housing situation in the country.
