Snoring, a common but often ignored sleep disorder, has been identified as a major disruptor of sleep quality, particularly among couples.

Dr. Martin Adu Afram, a physician assistant at Amphred Hospital in Nkoranza, Bono East Region, has cautioned that snoring can negatively impact relationships and overall well-being.

Speaking in an interview on Fabea FM, Dr. Afram explained that snoring occurs when the respiratory tract becomes blocked, restricting airflow through the nostrils.

He attributed the condition to several factors, including nasal congestion (catarrh), overeating, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, and poor sleeping posture.

“Snoring is not just a personal issue but also affects those around the snorer, particularly partners,” Dr. Afram warned. “It can disrupt the sleep of others, leading to fatigue, irritability, and other health complications.”

To manage snoring, he recommended adopting healthier lifestyle habits such as reducing alcohol intake, maintaining a regular exercise routine, sleeping on one’s side, and avoiding heavy meals before bedtime. Additionally, he advised that chronic snorers seek medical attention for proper diagnosis and treatment options.

Dr. Afram’s insights bring much-needed awareness to a condition that many dismiss as a mere inconvenience. By encouraging individuals to take proactive steps to address snoring, he hopes to improve sleep health and overall quality of life.

“Snoring is a common but manageable condition,” he emphasized. “With awareness, lifestyle changes, and medical intervention, individuals can significantly reduce its impact on their health and relationships.”

As medical professionals continue to highlight the importance of sleep health, Dr. Afram urges individuals to prioritize their well-being and seek help when necessary.
