The Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has indefinitely shut down Sokode Senior High Technical School following a violent altercation between students and residents of the Sokode community on Sunday, February 23, 2025.
According to a teacher who requested anonymity, the tension began on Friday, February 21, when a group of students reportedly left the school premises without authorization and became involved in a dispute with local residents. The altercation resulted in one resident sustaining injuries.
In what appeared to be retaliation, approximately ten young men from the community stormed the school compound on Sunday, allegedly seeking revenge. However, they were outnumbered by the student population of over one thousand, leading to a chaotic clash.
Several people from both sides sustained injuries, and some school property, including a staff member’s vehicle, was slightly damaged in the scuffle.
The situation escalated to the extent that Volta Regional Minister James Gunu intervened, deploying security personnel to restore order. After an emergency meeting with school authorities and community leaders, REGSEC decided to close the school indefinitely as a precautionary measure.
Following the closure, arrangements were made for buses from nearby Senior High Schools to transport students back to their respective homes.
Regional Minister James Gunu later addressed the media, while concerned parents who had rushed to the school expressed their reactions to the incident.
