A military officer has been taken into custody for allegedly trying to sell firearms to a civilian.
The arrest comes amid intensified police efforts to disrupt illegal arms networks operating in the Ashanti Region.
The apprehension followed a precise intelligence operation led by the Regional Director of the Ashanti South Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), ASP Princeton Peasah Darkwa. The suspect, identified as Warrant Officer Class II David Kofi Brew of the 4th Battalion, Kumasi, was arrested on Tuesday, 16th December 2025, at around 2:30 pm at the Bekwai Shell Filling Station.
Authorities report that he was about to complete a weapons transaction with an undercover police operative when detained.
According to the Ashanti South PID, the operation is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks supplying firearms to illicit actors in Obuasi and nearby communities. Preliminary intelligence suggested that W.O. II Brew was involved in illegal arms trading, prompting the police to deploy undercover officers to gather evidence.
Police reports reveal that on 15th December 2025, the suspect met with an undercover agent while arriving in a military vehicle bearing registration number 54 GA 92. During the meeting, W.O. II Brew allegedly offered to supply a variety of firearms, including M16 rifles, G3 rifles, pistols, and other weapons. The undercover agent reportedly agreed to purchase an M16 rifle, which the officer priced at GHC 80,000.
The arrest highlights the Ashanti South PID’s commitment to curbing the circulation of illegal firearms and ensuring public safety.
Authorities have assured that investigations will continue and that all individuals implicated in unlawful arms distribution will face the full force of Ghanaian law.
W.O. II David Kofi Brew remains in custody as investigations progress.
