The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), has confirmed the killing of one Ghanaian UN peacekeeper in Sudan.
According to UNISFA, the incident which occurred on Saturday, January 27, 2024, saw its base in Agok, a border town in the disputed Abyei region near the South Sudanese border, come under attack by armed group men.
The UN mission, however, said though they repelled the attack, “but tragically a Ghanaian peacekeeper was killed during the incident.”
In a statement, UNISFA, indicated that they evacuated some civilians to their bases following an intercommunal clashes that took place in the Nyinkuac, Majbong and Khadian areas, which led to casualties.
It explained that it was still verifying the number of people killed, injured and displaced by the violence.
The mission expressed its condemnation of the violent attack and its sympathies to the families of the peacekeeper and the civilians who lost their lives.
