The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu, welcomed the newly appointed Spanish Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Angel Lossada, and the crew of the Spanish naval ship, ESPS Meteoro, to the Naval Headquarters.
The visit highlighted the deepening collaboration between the Ghana Navy and the Spanish Navy, focusing on strengthening maritime security, training, and joint initiatives.
Ambassador Lossada reiterated Spain’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s defense and security, particularly in countering maritime threats in the Gulf of Guinea.
He recognized Ghana’s significance in regional stability and its role as a democratic leader, which underscores its priority status in maritime security cooperation.
Stressing the importance of peace and stability during Ghana’s upcoming 2024 general elections, he urged all parties to uphold civic responsibility and prioritize a peaceful electoral process.
Rear Admiral Yakubu, speaking on behalf of Ghana’s Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, expressed appreciation for Spain’s continued support.
He highlighted recent joint exercises and training initiatives between the two countries, noting that the visit of ESPS Meteoro provides a valuable opportunity for knowledge-sharing and partnership in addressing maritime threats.
The CNS also extended solidarity to Spain in light of recent flash floods, stating, “The Ghana Navy stands in solidarity with Spain during this difficult time, and our thoughts are with the families and communities impacted by the floods.”
Lieutenant Commander Inigo Franco, Commanding Officer of ESPS Meteoro, thanked Rear Admiral Yakubu for the warm welcome, adding that their presence in Ghana enhances opportunities for collaborative efforts in combating maritime security challenges.
The visit reflects a shared commitment to regional security and paves the way for further capacity-building programs aimed at enhancing maritime stability across West Africa.
