Speaker directs majority leader to move Afenyo’s motion on post-election employment terminations

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has directed the Majority Leader to formally schedule a motion filed by Minority Leader demanding a full parliamentary investigation into the recent termination of public sector appointments made after the 2024 general elections.

The directive, issued on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 followed a strong stance taken by the Minority Parliamentary Caucus, which announced its intention to deploy every available parliamentary mechanism to challenge the government’s decision.

The motion was filed last year by Alexander Afenyo-Markin but did not see the light of day.

The focus of the controversy is a directive issued by the Chief of Staff on February 11, 2025, which ordered the revocation of appointments of public sector workers recruited after the December 7, 2024, general elections.

The Minority has described the move as unfair and unlawful, insisting that Parliament must probe the circumstances and legality surrounding the terminations.

According to the Majority caucus, the matter is currently before the courts, and any parliamentary debate would violate the sub judice rule—a parliamentary convention that bars discussion on issues under active judicial consideration to prevent prejudice or interference with ongoing legal proceedings.
