The regional offices of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) were among offices that were shut down on Monday in Cape Coast for non-payment of property rate.

The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) said the decision to lock those offices were part of moves by the Assembly to crack down on defaulters in a bid to rake in more revenues.

Some of the offices locked up were using expired business operating permits. Some of the arrears date back to 2021.

Customers of the ECG were most hit by the temporary closure of its office on February 13 as they were left stranded.

According to the Assembly, ECG’s arrears are over 100 thousand cedis.

Leader of CCMA Metro City Guard, Chief Inspector John K. Mensah, told journalists the exercise would be extended to other defaulting institutions.

He therefore admonished businesses to clear up every debt that they owed.

Mr. Jonathan Yeboah, Assembly Finance Officer, advised those who cannot pay outright to show commitment and fashion out a payment plan with the Assembly to “avoid this kind of embarrassment”.
