Member of Parliament (MP) for the Asawase constituency, Muntaka Mubarak has raised concerns over the well-being of former and current MPs.
Eulogizing the late former MP of Kpandai, Tawia Likpalmor, the Asawase lawmaker noted that, MPs are not well taken care of outside the walls of Parliament adding that, Members must learn to associate with each other despite their political differences.
”Mr. Speaker, I can say for a fact that the current Chief of Staff supports the former Chief of Staff but the same cannot be said for Members of Parliament”.
According to Muntaka Mubarak, it is time former long-serving Members of Parliament are supported by current MPs and the state when the need arises, explaining that MPs who have served the nation for about 20 years need to be taken care of by the state in terms of emergencies.
“Let us build a family where we can take care of each other. Let’s be each other’s keeper and fight for a system that can protect us when we leave the walls of Parliament”, he stressed.
Additionally, former minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu supported the call by his colleague Muntaka Mubarak.
Sharing an experience, Mr. Iddrisu said a former Member died because he could not afford Gh¢12,000 to perform a surgery.
He also noted that efforts have been made to provide free health care for former MPs adding that MPs must leave a dignified life after serving the nation.
Haruna Iddrisu further called on the PURC to remember the late MP for the significant work he did for the financial autonomy of the commission.
