The State has introduced a new charge against Oliver Barker-Vormawor, leader of the anti-galamsey protest group Democracy Hub on Thursday, October 24, 2024.
Originally charged with stealing keys to a police towing vehicle, the prosecution, led by Senior State Attorney Nana Ama Adinkra, informed the court of an updated charge sheet.
The previous theft charge was withdrawn, and Barker-Vormawor is now accused of “intentionally turning off the ignition of a police towing truck.”
Additionally, the State discharged four other individuals associated with the case: Cedric Bansah, Emmanuel Offei, Nana Amo Mensah Prempeh, and Thomas Yeboah.
Barker-Vormawor, along with eight others, faces charges including conspiracy, unlawful assembly, causing unlawful damage, offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace, and assault on a public officer.
All accused have pleaded not guilty and are currently out on bail.
This update follows the recent arrest of 53 members of Democracy Hub for alleged lawlessness, with several individuals previously discharged by a Circuit Court in Accra.
On October 24, four more individuals were released after the State dropped charges against them.
