The Steele Family Foundation, in collaboration with its WISE Scholarship Program, has launched the Youth Thrive Project, a new initiative aimed at supporting 150 post-secondary students in Ghana.
The launch event, held on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at the Labadi Beach Hotel, brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Steele Family, SOS Children’s Villages Canada, SOS Ghana, and others.
The WISE Scholarship Program targets youth aged 14-18 years and spans four years, focusing on education, employability, life skills, and community engagement. Beneficiaries, referred to as WISE Scholars, will come from SOS Children’s Villages in Asiakwa, Kumasi, Tamale, Tema, as well as public schools in Dodowa, Shai-Osu Doku Municipality.
Speaking at the event, Michael Steele, President of the Steele Family Foundation, emphasized Ghana’s abundance of young talent and the importance of supporting their growth.
“Through the WISE program, we empower ‘stranded superstars’ with resources, mentorship, and opportunities to achieve their goals,” he said.
The WISE (World Impact Scholarship and Education) platform will enable participants to track their progress and access personalized learning tools, forming the backbone of the Youth Thrive Project.
The program’s “Earn to Learn” system evaluates academic performance, extracurricular activities, and social involvement to determine scholarship levels.
Harriet Lomotey, Director of Education for the Shai Osu Doku Municipal Assembly, delivered the keynote address, praising the initiative.
“Education is a bold initiative aimed at shaping the youth. This project affirms why education is the bridge that protects potential,” she stated.
The project aims for all beneficiaries to transition into employment, higher education, or entrepreneurship by 2028, driving socio-economic transformation in their communities.
A representative from SOS Children’s Villages Ghana highlighted the broader impact of the initiative: “This project not only provides access to education but equips young people with skills and opportunities to thrive.”
The Youth Thrive Project underscores a shared commitment to empowering young Ghanaians and creating lasting societal change.
