Students assault on Bawku SHS teachers unacceptable – GES

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has strongly condemned a violent assault perpetrated by students against two teachers at Bawku Senior High School in the Upper East Region.

The incident, which also resulted in the widespread destruction of school property, has sparked significant concern over the safety of educational staff.

According to an official statement issued by the GES, the disturbance was triggered by the enforcement of strict academic standards during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Reports suggest that the students retaliated directly against the rigorous invigilation and examination regulations implemented by the teaching staff.

In a sharp rebuke of the students’ behavior, the GES described the attack as entirely unacceptable and unjustifiable.

Management noted that such actions directly contradict the core values of discipline, respect, and integrity that underpin the nation’s educational system.

The service further noted that attacks on teachers performing their official duties constitute both a severe breach of school discipline and a direct threat to staff safety.

In response to the unrest, security personnel have been deployed to the campus to restore order. Normal academic and examination activities are currently proceeding under enhanced protection arrangements.

Meanwhile, the two affected teachers are receiving medical attention and support for their injuries.

The GES has confirmed that a full investigation is currently underway in collaboration with local security agencies to identify all individuals involved in the riot.

The authorities have maintained that anyone found culpable will face the full rigours of the law alongside standard internal disciplinary procedures.
