Taxi drivers at the Atronie station in Sunyani East are frustrated with the deteriorating condition of the Sunyani-Atronie-Ntotroso road, which has been left unfinished despite previous attempts to construct it.
The drivers, who contribute to the national revenue through taxes, feel neglected as they have not reaped the benefits of good roads, especially the crucial Atronie road.
According to Augustine Gyan, Chairman of GPRTU Taxi Branch No. 2 in Sunyani, the road construction has been halted due to the contractor’s financial constraints.
Gyan, who spoke to Kaakyire Kwasi Afari on Wednesday, alleged that Newmont Company’s initiative to asphalt the road was thwarted by the Ghana Highways Authority, which opted for a less effective reshaping instead.
In response to the situation, the drivers will stage a two-day peaceful demonstration on August 19th and 20th, during which they will park their vehicles and suspend their daily operations.
Gyan, affectionately known as Chairman Mozaato, apologized to commuters for the inconvenience caused by the planned demonstration and sought their understanding.
He emphasized that the demonstration would be called off if the contractor resumed work on the road.
