The Kaneshie District Court has remanded Bright Aweh, the prime suspect in the murder of 38-year-old Immigration Officer Stephen King Amoah, into custody until August 8, 2025.

This development followed a court appearance on Thursday, July 24, where the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Apewa Achana, prayed the court to remand the accused to allow for further investigations. Aweh is currently facing a provisional charge of murder, but his plea was not taken during the proceedings.

What began as a suspected kidnapping has since escalated into a murder investigation after the victim’s burnt body was found under suspicious circumstances.

The case, originally handled by other investigative units, has now been transferred to the Kaneshie District Court for further legal proceedings.

Stephen King Amoah was first reported missing on July 3, 2025, after leaving his Ashongman Estate residence to meet an acquaintance. A widespread search was launched, which ended tragically with the discovery of his partially burnt remains at Abuom Junction near Kwabenya on July 8.

Police investigations identified Bright Aweh as a key person of interest. He is believed to have been the last person in contact with the deceased before his disappearance and was later arrested as part of efforts to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the case.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, with additional evidence being gathered to establish the motive behind the crime and determine whether there were any accomplices.

The court is expected to receive further updates when the case resumes on August 8.

Statement from Police on his arrest

The Accra Regional Police Command launched a full-scale investigation into the death of Stephen King Amoah on July 10, 2025, following his reported disappearance on July 4. His charred body was discovered on July 9 in a gutter near the GBC Satellite, opposite Comet Estate in Accra.

According to police reports, the severely burnt body was recovered that morning and transported to the Police Hospital morgue. Investigators from the Taifa Police later joined the scene and accompanied the complainant and six family members to the morgue. Despite the severe burns, the family positively identified the deceased as Stephen King Amoah.

Preliminary findings revealed that on the night of July 3, at about 8:00 p.m., Mr. Amoah left home after receiving WhatsApp images of cash from Bright Aweh. The suspect had allegedly requested to meet him at a spot within Ashongman Estate to settle an outstanding debt. Mr. Amoah never returned, and attempts to reach him by phone were unsuccessful.

Bright Aweh was subsequently arrested. During interrogation, he admitted to giving the deceased GHS 500,000 in cash—claiming it was partly to settle debts and the remainder to be kept for later collection. However, his account was inconsistent, and he failed to provide a credible explanation for the source of the money.

The Accra Regional Police Command has condemned the incident and assured the public that it remains committed to pursuing justice. Members of the public with relevant information are urged to contact the nearest police station or call the emergency lines 18555 or 192.
