The National House of Chiefs has urged President John Dramani Mahama to take swift and firm action against illegal mining (galamsey), warning of its growing threat to public health and the environment.

At a durbar held during President Mahama’s ‘Thank You Tour’ of the Western North Region on Tuesday, July 15, the House’s President, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, voiced grave concern over the dire health consequences being recorded in galamsey-affected areas.

The Paramount Chief of Sefwi Anhwiaso revealed that health facilities in these communities are seeing a spike in complications linked to contaminated water sources, including severe illnesses and threats to newborns and fetuses.

“Illegal mining is polluting our rivers and bringing sickness to our people. Mr. President, we know you’ve shown commitment to this fight, but the urgency is greater than ever. We need bold action now,” he said.

Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II emphasized that the chiefs are ready to partner with the government to confront the menace head-on, assuring the President of the House’s full backing in any effort to combat galamsey.
