The Member of Parliament for the Salaga South Constituency, Hajia Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, has admonished young girls in her constituency to ensure good menstrual hygiene.

She intimated the consequences of poor menstrual hygiene can pose serious health complications for them in the future hence the need to be cautious and careful.

“As a woman myself, I identify with the challenges that women and girls face during their menstrual cycle and acknowledge the effects poor menstrual hygiene poses on the girl child thus the need for us all to improve our menstrual hygiene at both the national and constituency levels.

“Everything is increasing in this country including sanitary pads and this is unacceptable because it affects the very poor who cannot afford to buy a pad which is now sold between GH¢8 and GH¢10,” she added.

The MP appealed to government to invest more on menstrual health and hygiene by scraping import duties on sanitary pads in order to make it affordable to the less financially endowed.

The Salaga South lawmaker donated 240 packs of sanitary towels to the Municipal Planning and Girl Child Office under the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the East Gonja Municipality to be distributed to deprived female students from basic schools in her constituency.

This year’s global celebrations under the hashtag ‘Significance, all you need to know’ presents a global advocacy platform that brings together voices of individuals and groups to promote good menstrual practices and hygiene amongst all women and girls.
