Residents of Tamale have embarked on a demonstration to protest the sale of opioid and other illicit drugs in the metropolis.
The demonstrators are also demanding the security forces and government to intensify the fight against drug abuse.
Tamale, has become a hub of opioid trafficking in Ghana with majority of the youth engaged in the trade and usage of drugs.
Speaking exclusively to 3News.com, Chairman of the Anti-drug’s task force in Tamale, Jamal Yahaya appealed to REGSEC and the Tamale Metro Assembly to enact by-laws to deal with drug traffickers.
“There are no by-laws in Tamale that frown on trading of drugs which I think is thwarting our efforts as a task force and so we need government and the security to support us in that regard,” he appealed.
“This fight against drugs is not an easy one. Our youth are consuming the drugs, and their future is at stake. We need to tackle those selling the drugs that’s why we are demonstrating against the sale of the drugs,” he added.
Hundreds of residents wielding placards and chanted slogans against the sale of drugs.
