A joint taskforce comprising the Tree Crop Development Authority, the Oil Palm Development Association of Ghana, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, and National Security impounded 1450 gallons of smuggled vegetable oil at CMB Market, Accra.

During the operation on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, the taskforce visited some retail shops in Dome, where the majority of the traders were following the directives and selling more of the local and approved brands of cooking oil. At the Okaishie market, the retailers directed the team to the main suppliers of the suspected smuggled vegetable oil at CMB.

The taskforce impounded two trucks loaded with 1000 gallons [25 litres] of suspected smuggled vegetable oil at “The Lord’s Cares Company,”  and 450 gallons [25 litres] were also seized at Age Dave Enterprise.

The second day of the exercise was marked by positive concerns, as the taskforce used the opportunity to educate market women about the risks of selling unbranded oil.

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to combatting illicit trade of vegetable oil and protecting our nation’s economy. This seizure underscores the effectiveness of our operations and sends a clear message to those engaged in such unlawful activities.” Mr. Paul Amaning, Coordinator of the Task Force

The intercepted vegetable oil, believed to have been smuggled through unapproved routes and land borders to evade taxes and import duties, represents a significant loss to criminal syndicates attempting to circumvent legal channels.

“We will continue to strengthen our efforts to combat smuggling and protect the interests of legitimate businesses and consumers alike.” Mr. Owusu Emmanuel Afriyie, Principal Administrator at TCDA

The taskforce has vowed to intensify its efforts to crack down on smuggled vegetable oil on the Ghanaian market.

As operations into the smuggling of suspected vegetable oil continue, authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may threaten the nation’s economic security.
