A 36-year-old teacher, John Ankomah Boateng, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison with hard labour for fraudulently withdrawing over ₵238,550 from Bosomefreho Rural Bank using the GhanaPay app.
According to court records, the fraudulent transactions took place between February 9 and February 26, 2024.
Despite having only ₵2.23 in his account, Boateng was able to exploit the banking system and illegally withdraw large sums of money.
During police interrogation, the accused admitted to the crime and revealed that he transferred portions of the stolen money to various individuals for safekeeping.
He disclosed that he sent ₵10,000 to a person identified as Isaac, ₵5,000 to Kwaku, ₵20,000 to Duah, and ₵5,000 to an individual known as Neymar.
Additionally, he confessed to transferring ₵40,000 to a travel agent to facilitate travel arrangements.
