The Accra Circuit Court II, presided over by Her Honour Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, has granted bail to two teenagers accused of attacking and robbing a female police officer with a cutlass near the Nungua Barrier in June this year.

The accused persons, Mustapha Abu, an auto mechanic, and Sadat Mohammed Issah, an electrician, were each admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢10,000 with two sureties.

One of the sureties must be a salaried worker earning not less than GH¢2,000 per month, while the other is required to be justified.

The matter has been adjourned to August 28, 2025, for continuation at the Criminal Matters Court (CMC).

Abu and Issah are jointly charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery, in violation of Sections 23(1) and 149 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). Both have no fixed place of abode.

Background of case

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Daniel Ofori-Appiah, informed the court that the incident occurred on Friday night, June 6, 2025.

The complainant, Lance Corporal Confidence Tetteh, stationed at the Tema Community Two Police Station, had just alighted from a vehicle near the Hisense showroom at the Ashaiman-Spintex junction and was attempting to cross the road when she was confronted by three young men riding a Royal motorbike, registration number M-25GT8589.

According to the prosecutor, Mustapha Abu, who was wielding a short cutlass, got off the motorbike and grabbed the policewoman by the shirt, demanding her phone with the threat, “Your life or your phone.”

When she hesitated, Abu reportedly slashed her on the left side of the neck with the weapon, causing a deep wound. The attackers then made away with her iPhone XR (64GB) and SIM card.

The victim later reported the incident to the Nungua Police and was issued a medical form for treatment. Meanwhile, a police team intercepted the suspects that same night at a snap checkpoint in Katamanso.

A search conducted on the suspects led to the discovery of the stolen iPhone XR, along with three other mobile phones suspected to have been taken from other victims.

The accused were handed over to the Nungua Police for further investigations and were subsequently charged and brought before the court.

Age Discrepancy and Bail Ruling

At the initial court appearance on June 23, 2025, both accused persons claimed to be minors, stating their ages as 16 and 17, despite having earlier declared they were 18.

Due to the discrepancy, the court ordered age verification. A medical report submitted on July 2, 2025, indicated that Mustapha Abu is between 16 and 17 years of age, while Sadat Mohammed Issah is at least 19 years old.

The two were initially remanded into police custody pending the outcome of the age assessment and further investigations.

With bail now granted, the case is expected to continue as scheduled on August 28, 2025.
