Tema: Firefighters contains major outbreak in old GHAPOHA building

A major fire broke out this morning in a 10-storey building within the premises of Flour Mills Ghana Ltd, formerly GHAPOHA Yard in the Tema industrial enclave.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed that the incident was reported at approximately 8:45 a.m., and the first fire appliance arrived on the scene by 8:51 a.m., just six minutes after the call was received.

According to Divisional Officer II (DOII) Desmond Ackah, Head of Public Relations at the GNFS, the fire is believed to have started on the third floor and was quickly prevented from spreading beyond the fifth floor due to a rapid and coordinated firefighting operation.

“Our personnel from Tema Metro, Newtown, Industrial Area, and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) responded swiftly, deploying four fire tenders and a Turn Table Ladder,” DO II Ackah stated.

“As of now, the fire has been contained, and our teams are combing through the building floor-by-floor to extinguish residual heat pockets and ensure full extinguishment.”

No casualties have been reported, and there were no immediate threats to surrounding properties.

Firefighters remained on the scene hours after the blaze began to perform damping-down operations and monitor for reignition.

The Acting Chief Fire Officer, Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong, along with the Tema and Greater Accra Regional Fire Commanders, visited the scene to offer strategic guidance and assess the situation firsthand.

An investigation is expected to be launched into the cause of the fire.

The GNFS has meanwhile urged all industrial facilities to review their fire safety protocols and ensure functional fire protection systems are in place.
