Management of Tema General Hospital has denied claims that a baby died as a result of a power outage.
On Tuesday, March 27, 2024, a video widely circulated on social media, showed how the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the hospital had been plunged into darkness as a result of a power outage.
Meanwhile, in a March 27, 2024 press release, the hospital acknowledged that there was a power outage that forced them to rely on their power plant for electricity.
However, the hospital indicated that their plant developed a fault and for two hours, their electricians worked to restore power, adding that no life was lost.
“The dedicated generator set to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) tripped off for a short period and the hospital’s electricians worked to restore power to the Unit until the national grid was restored.
“It is worth noting that no lives were lost as a result of this power outage,” part of the statement read.
Despite the hospital’s claims, one mother who had her child at the Unit told the media that she had lost her child as a result of the power outage.
“I was supposed to go and visit my child around 4 am so when I went there, I couldn’t find my child and the doctor told me to wait outside. So I was outside and he came that they are sorry because I have lost my child due to the light out last night,” she told TV3.
