Chaos erupted at the Savannah College of Education in Daboya after some residents clashed with students over the lockdown of classrooms in protest against alleged deception by the school’s management.
The tension began on Saturday, March 1, when aggrieved Level 100 students locked up lecture halls and boycotted academic activities.
The students claim they were misled into believing the school would be absorbed by the government as a public institution, only to discover otherwise after admission.
They argue that the school was listed on the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) website, giving them the impression of a government takeover.
Determined to have their concerns addressed, the students sealed off classrooms and vowed to confront any lecturer who attempted to hold classes.
However, the situation escalated on Monday, March 3, when some Daboya residents stormed the college, demanding that the locked classrooms be reopened.
The standoff quickly turned heated, leading to a violent confrontation between the students and community members.
Security forces were deployed to the campus to quell the clashes, but not before classroom furniture was vandalized during the chaos.
As of now, the college’s management has not issued a statement on the matter.
Meanwhile, tensions remain high as residents have issued an ultimatum, threatening to take further action if the classrooms are not reopened by midday on Tuesday, March 4.
