Residents of Old Town and Zongo in Bibiani have escalated their protests against a mining company operating in the area, with demonstrators spending the night at the protest grounds.
The situation remains volatile as top executives from the company prepare to engage with the protesters later today.
The demonstration, which began yesterday, is driven by long-standing grievances including alleged environmental degradation, insufficient job opportunities for locals, and fears of displacement.
Protesters, comprising men, women, and youth, have vowed to continue their action until their demands are adequately addressed.
“We have suffered for too long while the resources of our land are being taken away. We need jobs, we need clean water, and we need fair treatment,” one protester said during an interview.
Reports suggest that representatives from the mining company, including senior officials from Accra, are scheduled to meet with the demonstrators at 11:00 am on Tuesday.
The company hopes to resolve the standoff through dialogue. Community leaders have expressed their willingness to participate in discussions but insist that tangible commitments must be made before the protests are called off.
“Dialogue is important, but we will not back down until we see concrete action to address our concerns,” a community leader stated.
In the meantime, security personnel have been deployed to monitor the situation and ensure the protest remains peaceful. Despite their presence, tensions remain high as residents eagerly await the outcome of the planned discussions.
