The Majority Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament are demanding for the immediate cancellation of the party’s parliamentary primary held in the Ayawaso East Constituency, citing allegations of vote buying.

A statement issued and signed by Mahama Ayariga, Majority leader on Sunday, the caucus said it had become aware of widely circulated claims of electoral malpractice in the just-ended primary in the Greater Accra constituency.

The caucus strongly condemned the alleged developments, describing them as contrary to efforts to reset Ghana’s political culture.

Following what it described as extensive deliberations, the Majority Caucus said its leadership, together with the extended caucus leadership, had resolved to formally communicate its position to the Functional Executive Committee of the NDC.

The caucus is demanding the annulment of the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary with immediate effect.

It further called for the disqualification of any candidate found to have engaged in unethical conduct during the process, including barring such individuals from participating in any subsequent primary that may be organised after the annulment.

“The NDC Majority Caucus remains committed to restoring integrity to our politics,” the statement said.

The call was signed by Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament.

The NDC leadership has yet to publicly respond to the caucus’ demands, while party supporters and observers continue to await further direction on the future of the Ayawaso East parliamentary contest.
