A political science lecturer has criticised the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing nationwide “Thank You Tour,” describing it as a distraction from urgent internal issues that could affect the party’s performance in the next general election.
Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, says the tour is ill-timed, coming on the heels of divisive internal contests that have left deep fractures within the party.
“I don’t think it’s necessary,” he said in an interview.
“We have more pressing issues that I would have thought the party would spend more time addressing in detail.”
According to Dr. Asah-Asante, the NPP’s parliamentary and presidential primaries were marked by intense bickering and factionalism—tensions that are still simmering beneath the surface.
“We saw the bickering and the rancour that characterised the party’s internal elections, and it fed into the whole electoral process,” he noted. “You cannot discount this.”
He warned that unless the party acts quickly to reconcile its members and rebuild trust internally, the divisions could jeopardise its chances in the 2024 general elections.
“This is something that lingers on within the political space,” he added, urging party leaders to prioritise unity over celebration.
