Former Awutu Senya East MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has spoken publicly for the first time following an assault on her during the Ablekuma North parliamentary election rerun at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor.
In an official statement, Madam Koomson confirmed that she was attacked by individuals she identified as “NDC machomen” while peacefully observing the election process.
According to her, the assailants not only assaulted her physically but also forcefully took her mobile phone during the chaos.
She cautioned the public to disregard any calls, texts, or online activity originating from her number, as she currently does not have control over her personal phone or digital platforms.
“Any message or social media post after this incident should be considered unauthorized,” she stated.
The confrontation erupted when a group of unidentified men arrived at the polling station in a pickup truck and on motorbikes, creating panic among voters and election officials.
Eyewitnesses reported that Madam Koomson attempted to use pepper spray in self-defense but was quickly overpowered.
A widely circulated video from the scene showed the former Fisheries Minister on the ground as several individuals rushed toward her.
Despite an increased police presence deployed to ensure calm, the situation spiraled into violence.
Investigations into the motive and individuals behind the attack are ongoing.
