Two individuals met their tragic end in the Ogobiri community of Sagbama Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, Nigeria, while allegedly attempting to steal solar-powered streetlights.
The lifeless bodies were discovered early on Saturday, December 28, near the New Site of Niger Delta University and the Ogobiri roundabout. According to eyewitness accounts, the suspected thieves had already dismantled four streetlight poles and were in the process of removing a fifth when disaster struck.
Reports suggest that the fifth pole toppled onto nearby high-tension electrical wires, resulting in the electrocution of the two individuals.
Local residents have raised concerns about the frequent theft of solar streetlights in the area. These incidents have sparked calls for increased security measures to protect public infrastructure and deter further acts of vandalism.
The authorities have yet to release an official statement on the incident, but the community remains on edge as it grapples with the recurring issue of infrastructure theft.
