The Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation (MoCD) has commenced training for a third batch of 1,000 girls in the Ashanti Region under the “Girls-in-ICT” program, covering 47 districts across three phases.
This initiative is part of Ghana’s commitment to empowering young girls with essential ICT skills, bridging the gender digital divide.
Currently, training is underway for girls in 14 districts, including Oforikrom Municipal, Asokwa Municipal, Afigya Kwabre South, and Manhyia North Sub Metro. Previous batches have already trained girls in districts like Ejura Sekyere Odumasi, Mampong Municipal, and Atwima Mponua District, while the first round covered districts such as Offinso North, Ahafo Ano North, and Asante Akyem South.
The curriculum focuses on key digital skills, including coding, website design, internet safety, game development, and animation.
This year’s global theme, “Leadership,” supports Ghana’s objective to equip girls for future leadership roles across sectors, as ICT becomes vital to fields like healthcare and finance. Since the program’s inception in 2012, more than 13,981 girls and women have benefitted from this training. The initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5, as well as Ghana’s ICT for Accelerated Development (ICT4AD) policy to close the gender gap in technology.
The Girls-in-ICT program is a significant step towards empowering young women in Ghana, equipping them with the skills to thrive in a digital economy and inspiring them to pursue leadership roles in technology.
