A tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway has claimed the lives of three members of the same family — a father, mother, and their child — leaving two others injured, according to officials. The crash occurred early Wednesday near the Otedola Bridge in Lagos.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported that the accident involved an Audi, a Toyota Camry, and a Toyota Corolla, and was triggered when a heavily loaded truck, reportedly speeding, rammed into one of the vehicles. The impact caused a chain reaction, resulting in the fatal collision.
Emergency teams, including LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and the Lagos Fire & Rescue Service, rushed to the scene. While the three family members died instantly, the two injured victims were rescued and rushed to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre for urgent treatment.
Reports indicate that the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the crash. Authorities have vowed to investigate and bring those responsible to justice.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as “tragic and irreplaceable” and urged all motorists, particularly those driving heavy vehicles, to observe speed limits and exercise caution on the expressway. He emphasised that reckless driving remains a major cause of accidents on Nigeria’s highways.
The accident has renewed public calls for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations, better driver education, and improved monitoring of vehicle compliance along major highways to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
